The first beginnings of collecting museum materials and objects in the Benkovac area began at the end of the 19th century. century when the great Benkovac families (Novakovići, Jurkovići) in accordance with the spirit of Europe at that time collected archaeological and ethnographic material as collectors for private collections.
With the renovation of Kaštela Benković in 1977. Mr. at the National University of Benkovac, in the premises of the castle itself, a small native collection began to operate, which was created thanks to a few enthusiasts who handed over their collections as the foundation for the establishment of the Native Museum of the Benkovac region, which is the first record of the existence of a museum in Benkovac.
The Benkovac Native Museum was founded in 1983, then as part of the National University of Benkovac. The museum dealt with the collection of archaeological, ethnological and cultural-historical material from the wider Benkovac area. According to the data preserved before the Homeland War, the museum had a rich archaeological collection with over 15,000 objects, an ethnological collection with about 150 objects, a cultural-historical collection, as well as a collection of photographs, postcards, and a rich library. The archaeological exhibition of the museum was arranged, partly the ethnic exhibition, and further work was done on the processing and collection of materials from numerous localities in the Benkovac region.
The Benkovac Native Museum, in addition to museum work in cooperation with the City of Benkovac, the Tourist Board of the City of Benkovac, KUD Branimir Benkovac, the Asseria klapa, and other associations and institutions of the City of Benkovac, participates in organizing various cultural events: klapa show, ethno festival, theater performances, workshops and courses on the preservation of traditional crafts, exhibitions, guides.
The museum provides expert guidance services for groups in the museum – Kaštel Benković, Asseria archaeological park, Kličevica site and Karin – Franciscan monastery.
In cooperation with the Tourist Board of the City of Benkovac and KUD Branimir Benkovac, the production of autochthonous souvenirs of the Benkovac region was started (“Heritage in stone” – four-hook embroidery and replicas of glass vessels from Aseria filled with Benkovački rose wine).
